Austin Horton
4th year Doctoral Candidate
Department of Medicinal and Biological Chemistry
Austin's birth into royal privilege created immediate envy and resentment in his community, especially his father's younger brother, Scar, who knew that Austin would replace him as heir to the throne. On Scar's orders, a group of hyenas incited a wildebeest stampede in which Austin's father was tragically trampled to death. After running far-far away, Austin spent the remainder of his youth with a meerkat and a warthog, living a carefree life with his friends under the motto "hakuna matata". Now a grown lion, Austin has realized he can no longer run from his past and has joined the Schiefer lab to plot his revenge and become the rightful leader of his pride.

Ethel Tackie-Yarboi
4th year Doctoral Candidate
Department of Medicinal and Biological Chemistry
Ethel grew up in a fairy-tale like environment. Ethel and her younger sister, Anna, would play all-day inside their large castle home, often singing and dancing. Then suddenly, a tragic accident at sea left them without parents. This was especially difficult for Ethel, because she needed help concealing her special power- an ability freeze anything she touched. After years in seclusion, Ethel and her sister decided to host a grand party. Unfortunately, things went terribly wrong, and Ethel accidently cast her entire village into eternal winter. Ethel has joined the Schiefer lab with the hope of learning how to reverse her spell and redeem her kingdom. We have recently recruited a team of consultants to aide her: her sprightly sister, a rough-hewn mountaineer, a reindeer named Sven, and a hilarious snowman.

Minions (undergraduate students)
Katelyn C. Hagood
4th year, Bach. Sci. Pharm. Sci. Program,
BSPS Scholar, Honors Student, Department of Medicinal and Biological Chemistry
Katelyn is from the Ann Arbor, MI area and is the recipient of a First Year Summer Research Experience (FYSRE) Fellowship from the University of Toledo Office of Undergraduate Research. She began in our lab in the spring of 2016 and will continue through the summer, with stipend support from the University of Toledo Office for Undergraduate Research First-Year Summer Research Experience (FYSRE) program. Katelyn is working on analyzing the metabolism of a prototype attenuated nitric oxide mimetic furoxan. Her work involves working with rat liver microsomes and analyzing metabolism using HPLC-UV-MS/MS analysis. Katelyn plans to eventually enroll in a graduate program. She enjoys long walks on the beach and romantic candlelit dinners.

Kelsee Zajac
3rd year, Bach. Sci. Pharm. Sci. Student
Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics
Despite claiming residence in Ohio, Kelsee grew up in the far east. As a young maiden in China, Kelsee learned that her weakened and lame father was to be called up into the army in order to fight the invading Huns. Knowing that he would never survive the rigours of war, Kelsee decided to disguise herself and join the army in his place. Unknown to her, her ancestors were aware her plot and to prevent it, they order a tiny disgraced dragon, Mushu to join her in order to force her to abandon her plans. But when Mushu meets Kelsee, he learns that she cannot be dissuaded and so decides to help her in the perilous times ahead.

Anvitha Madhavaram
2nd year Pre-professional Student, Bach. Sci./M.D. Program,
Honors Student, Department of Biological Sciences
Anvitha is from Schaumburg, Illinois and is the recipient of a First Year Summer Research Experience (FYSRE) Fellowship from the University of Toledo Office of Undergraduate Research. She is evaluating the ability of furoxans to protect neurons against glutamate excitotoxicity and oligomeric AB induced cell death. The purpose of her work is to evaluate furoxans in additional cell based neuroprotection assays. Anvitha plans to attend medical school after receiving her bachelor’s degree. She currently spends her free time working with organizations like Relay for Life and Miracle Network Dance Marathon to plan fundraising events during the school year.
